Building Healthy Corridors: Transforming Urban and Suburban Arterials into Thriving Places

This report explores strategies for restructuring automobile-focused commercial corridors into corridors that embrace health and sustainable transportation. It is presented in four sections. Section one defines what constitutes a healthy corridor. Section two presents case studies from corridor redevelopment projects throughout the U.S. Section three focuses on four demonstration corridors and lessons learned from Federal Boulevard, Denver, Colorado; Vista Avenue, Boise, Idaho; Van Nuys Boulevard, Los Angeles, California; and Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee. Section four discusses the implementation and planning of improvements. It presents ten principles to be shared with stakeholders during the planning process.
