Damage Characterization in Existing Asphalt Layer Concrete for ME Rehabilitation Design
In this paper, damage characterization of existing asphalt concrete (AC) layer for the purpose of mechanistic-empirical (ME) rehabilitation design is studied. Structural condition of existing AC layer in AASHTOWare Pavement ME design is characterized in terms of the modulus estimated from falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing for Level 1 rehabilitation design. On the other hand, damage is estimated from the amount of fatigue cracking at the pavement surface for design Level 2. For this study, data were extracted from the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database and used to develop time-series data for FWD, AC dynamic modulus and cracking for calculating pavement damage in accordance with the ME design methodology. Optimization analysis was performed to calibrate the AC damage model by minimizing the error between fatigue cracking values predicted from ME design Levels 1 and 2, and those from field measurements.
