Sign Assembly Installation: Bridging the Gap between Research and Implementation

Recent changes to national standards and guidelines for road sign assemblies have resulted in numerous updates across various institutional publications. State departments of transportation are now required to incorporate these changes into their official policies and procedures, but often lack the internal expertise and resources to fully implement these changes. This study examined national standards and guidelines, and researched the state of practice for road sign assembly installations. In this effort, the research team actively collaborated with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) personnel to identify the challenges within their road sign assembly program, and developed innovative solutions to improve implementation success across the state. As such, the research team developed a series of product deliverables for KYTC, each with a different focus to further advance technology transfer. First, the creation of a Sign Installation and Inspection Training Workshop helped train individuals responsible for the inspection, installation, and oversight of Kentucky’s road sign assemblies. Second, the Sheet Sign Installation and Inspection Guide provided KYTC field employees with a user-friendly, pocket-sized manual detailing relevant road sign policies and procedures. Lastly, the final research report presented main findings to the KYTC study advisory committee, as well as provided recommendations to decision makers for improving internal standards and guidelines. This three-pronged approach served as a model to best address the most critical elements of successful agency-wide adoption, including the development of training and guidance for a diverse group of stakeholders.
