Tunnel Implications of Decking Urban Roadways for Air Rights Development
Many U.S. cities are currently planning developments in the air rights above urban highways, to construct parks, buildings and facilities, or to recapture the urban fabric that existed prior to roadway construction. The decks constructed over the roadway span the roadway and support the development above, but what must also be considered is these structures create a roadway tunnel by their presence. This paper describes the tunnel that will be formed by air rights structures currently being constructed in Washington, D.C. as a part of a major development project, and the impact of the construction on an existing abutting tunnel. Lighting, ventilation, and power distribution are among the tunnel systems discussed.
