Exploring Passenger Boarding Time Differences of Adults and Seniors: A Smart Card Data Based-Study of Changzhou, China

Understanding the nature of passenger behavior and its effects on bus dwell time have potential benefits for both passengers and operators. Although only the passengers boarding records are available in most cities of China, the application of smart card technology provides much better data resource than manually collected data for the analysis of boarding process. In this study, the difference or interval between consecutive boarding records, which is defined as the passenger boarding gap, is measured first. After illustrating the distribution of boarding gaps for different types of passengers, an analysis of variance is conducted, and it is found that there is a statistically significant difference in the boarding gap between adults and seniors. Then, a multiple regression model was estimated to analyze the influences of different types of passengers, the marginal effects of additional passengers at one stop and the floor types on the total boarding time at each stop. The results show that there is a constant difference in the boarding time between adults and seniors even without considering the specific bus characteristics, and the marginal effect has negative influences on the average boarding time of both adults and seniors. In addition, the entrance step delays the boarding process, especially for the seniors. The authors' findings may help to better understand the passenger boarding behavior, contribute to the policy making and promote the bus service reliability.
