Determination of Modulus and Adhesion Properties of Mastic Components Within Asphalt Mixtures

Mechanical properties of the individual component in asphalt mixture are important input parameters for material design and multi-scale mechanical modeling. This paper proposes an innovative technique of measuring the modulus and adhesion properties of asphalt mastic within asphalt mixture using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). An AC-13 mixture with unmodified binder compacted in the laboratory was investigated. In order to achieve high quality images, sample preparation is a critical factor for AFM test. In this paper, the method of sample preparation was discussed firstly. A new quantitative index, namely surface roughness, was introduced for evaluating the flatness of different samples. Finally, micromechanical properties such as modulus and adhesive force of components in asphalt mastic were determined. The results show that freezing method could ensure the flatness of mixture samples effectively. AFM was certified a successful quantitative characterization of micromechanical properties of components in asphalt mastic. Nevertheless, because of mineral material coating with asphalt binder in asphalt mastic, the measurement value is not a constant value but a range. In terms of the quantitative results, AFM is more suitable to measure the properties of asphalt binder. This study provides a fundamental research for investigation of micromechanical properties of asphalt mixture in AFM test.
