Capacity Optimization and Allocation of Multi-Line Joint Operation for Subway Network
A recurring challenge that faces Beijing subway network today is the persistent question of large number of transfer passengers. The multi-line joint operation permits residents to travel easily into the other lines without transfer. So the aim of this study, is to focus on how multi-line joint operates in Beijing and on its potential of reducing transfer passengers. This research proposes (a) a meaningful, yet simple, way for defining the area and route of multi-line joint operation and (b) a capacity allocation model that will improve transfer efficiency and simultaneously take waiting time, number of available trains, and departure interval into account. This study takes Changping line-line 13 joint operation as an example, the departure frequency of trains for joint operation is obtained by adopting this model. It also found that compared with independent operation, the multi-line joint operation can save 45.7% of total transfer time. The authors also analyzed the fact that number of trains available changes the capacity optimization and allocation scheme, and it is obtained optimal number of available trains that should be provided by subway managers.
