Multiline Coordinated Skip-Stop Operation at an Urban Rail Transit Transfer Station for Non-recurrent Extreme Passenger Flow Mitigation
Urban rail transit transfer station is a key facility for gathering and switching passenger flows. High passenger demand coupled with non-recurrent events (e.g. train delay) may cause extreme passenger flow and density within the station, resulting in high risks of disastrous consequences (e.g. stampede). This paper proposes multiline coordinated train skip-stop plans to prevent extreme passenger flow and densities at transfer stations. A nonlinear binary programming model is developed and solved by the genetic algorithm (GA) to best plan the multiline skip-stop strategy. Case studies using real passenger demand and train data are performed to verify the model and the algorithm. Results indicate that application of the proposed skip-stop plan can significantly reduce the total passenger waiting time at transfer stations, therefore lower the risk of disastrous consequences.
