Permanent Deformation Prediction of Unbound Granular Layers with Varying Moisture and Fines Content Using Constant Confining Pressure Stress Paths
Permanent deformation of the unbound granular layers is a major concern encountered in flexible pavements. In order to improve the rutting performance of multi-layer structures, it is necessary to mechanistically identify the factors that contribute to the progression of plastic deformations with the application of repeated traffic loads. Proper characterization of the deformation behavior of geomaterials in the laboratory can potentially decrease future maintenance costs due to excessive rutting of pavements. Current rutting models fail to incorporate factors such as moisture state, gradation and stress-paths, which are paramount to proper characterization of base and sub-base layers. Failing to incorporate these important features can potentially induce a systematic error that consequently will result in underestimation of the rutting performance of geomaterials in pavement foundations. The main motivation for this study was to develop a framework to successfully incorporate moisture state, fine content, and stress path sensitivity to rutting performance of geomaterials. A comprehensive laboratory experiment incorporating three different gradations of a limestone source molded at different moisture states was considered in this study. The specimens were in turn subjected to various constant confining pressure stress paths to capture the synergistic influence of moisture content, fines content, and the components of stress path on the rutting performance of the laboratory specimen. The analysis of the dissipated energy in the repeated dynamic loading conditions in this research provided valuable insights on the rutting sensitivity of the unbound granular layers subjected to moisture ingress.
