Impacts of proximity to urban rail transit on residents’ travel mode choice and vehicle purchase
This paper quantitatively analyzes the impacts of proximity to urban rail transit on residents’ travel mode choice and vehicle purchase, using a valuable travel survey dataset with a decent sample size (10,383 travel activities of 4,613 individuals from 1,465 households) from Nanjing, China. Multinomial logit models are developed to investigate the impacts, while taking into account residents’ household characteristics, individual attributes, and trip information. Modeling results indicate that residents whose travel origin and/or destination adjacent to the catchment area of rail transit are more likely to travel by rail transit, particularly those who have low annual household income and own bikes. This preference increases for females, older travelers, and public transit cardholders. Travelers who spend long travel time and make urban-to-suburb and suburb-to-urban trip are more likely to use urban rail. Vehicle purchase modeling results indicate that families living adjacently to rail transit are less likely to purchase cars within the future three years. Findings from this paper provide urban planners and decision-makers with experiential support and theoretical basis to understand the role of rail transit in shifting residents’ trips from cars to public transport and delaying vehicle purchase.
