Reducing Urban NO₂-Pollution with Photocatalytical Asphalt Surfaces

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) emissions from road traffic still remain a key problem for the urban environment and public health. The technical, legal and infrastructural measures in recent years have only led to a slight improvement in air quality in cities. An alternative, new approach is the application of photocatalytic effective materials in road construction to reduce NO₂. As part of a research project – including the project partners F. C. Nüdling Betonelemente GmbH + Co. KG and Technische Universität Darmstadt – artificially produced rocks with photocatalytic properties were developed. The project objective was to produce long-term photocatalytic effective granules that fulfill the standard requirements for chippings regarding the use in high load classes. This article introduces this new possible application and explains the procedure for the investigations carried out in laboratory, small-scale tests and on the road.
