A Study of Lane Change Behavior of Heavy Vehicle and Passenger Car on the Influence of Conflict

This paper presents the exploring study of lane change execution behavior of heavy vehicle and passenger car. Observed field data of vehicle behavior in a blocked lane traffic situation was collected by video images and was used as a basis for the analysis. The result indicates that the lane change conflict influences drivers’ behavior. It also revealed that lane change execution characteristics, such as duration and trajectory, of heavy vehicle (HV) and passenger car (PC) are different. An exploratory model of land change duration is presented. The model relates the lane change duration to the lane change conflict and shows that the factors influencing the duration for HV and PC differs. It implies HV should have the separate lane changing models from PC in the traffic simulations.
