Is Calibration a Straight-Forward Task if Detailed Trajectory Data is Available?
To calibrate a model of pedestrian dynamics, the authors compare its simulation results with empirical data obtained as part of the Hermes research project. During the calibration process the authors realize that certain properties of the empirical data could only be reproduced by assuming a spatially inhomogeneous distribution of participants on the starting area with regard to their free or desired walking speeds. Changes of the parameters of the model of dynamics could not bring that agreement. The authors conclude that what they experienced is a good example for the relation between empirical data and model calibration whose complexity is usually underestimated. Thus the answer to the title question is “no”.
