MATERIALS HANDLING SYSTEM TAMES DIFFICULT PRODUCT
Fluid petroleum coke is handled, stored and loaded on ships at an unusual facility in Benicia, Calif. Kaiser Engineers designed the system for Humble Oil Refining Co. The Benicia Port Terminal Co. operates it. Among its more troublesome aspects are dustiness-high dust emission when dry, abrasiveness-high wear on liners and moving parts, fluidity-difficult to contain, and stickiness-packs when wet. Over-all, the system, a blend of pneumatic and conventional equipment, has proved to be the most effective approach. Use of conventional underground car hoppers, feeder, belt conveyors, and bucket elevators, would have resulted in high maintenance costs because of the greater number of moving parts.
