Vehicle Road Distance Measurement and Maintenance in RFID Systems on Roads

In order to enhance the safety of driving, the authors propose a vehicle road distance measurement and maintenance system (RDMMS) based on the emerging radio frequency identification (RFID) systems on Roads (RSR), where RFID tags are deployed on the road surface to provide road information to the vehicle that has installed an RFID reader. RDMMS can measure the road distance between two vehicles via analyzing the information stored in the RFID tags and adjust the vehicle speed according to the safe distance requirement and the estimated status of the vehicle in front. Simulations demonstrate that RDMMS can always successfully avoid rear-end collision under several driving environments while keeping the driver comfortable.
