Reversing the decline in rail freight

Private operators and shippers are being brought together by the EU-funded Smart Rail research project in order show that they can support a reliable, flexible and cost-efficient wagonload freight network through the use of specific technology and processes. In countries where incumbent operators have been cutting back wagonload operations, innovation is needed.
