Using spatial presentation of bus GPS data to identify and justify bus priority upgrades

GPS devices fitted to large bus fleets can gather a wealth of data. However, understanding and sorting through the mass of data collected is essential to get to useable information. A combination of GIS, statistical and transport planning analysis can be used to identify locations where bus priority is needed and how it can be used to support the case for road and bus infrastructure improvements. WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff developed a GIS geoprocessing model to filter, analyse and present bus data based on bus route stopping patterns. Once the large database is condensed into a manageable size, statistical analysis can be used to obtain the information required to plan road network improvements and refine bus timetables. Transport planning and GIS can combine again to improve the presentation of the information to illustrate the existing issues and the need for improvement in a manner that is easily understandable, assisting in influencing project acceptance.
