EAST ASIATICS FAITH IN CP PROPELLERS
The comparative experience of the East Asiatic Co Ltd with controllable-pitch and fixed propellers is given for ships with engine rooms unmanned most of the time. The experience gained on these ships does not include any direct and clear economical gains which could compensate for the higher first cost and higher maintenance cost of the cp propeller. On the positive side are better and safer maneuvering, better conditions in the engine room, the engineers preference for the cp propeller to bridge control of engine, better crash stopping power and a gain during the life of the cp propeller ship corresponding to the increased docking interval. A clear drawback in connection with cp propellers is the considerably higher cost for overhauling and survey and the longer time needed.
