Back to the future

This article discusses recent large-scale investments in and upgrades to the U.K.'s Network Rail that have resulted in more reliable train services and improved passenger facilities. The author explores the new approach to railway engineering that has played an important role in the success of these improvements. This approach includes high speed handbacks, which allow trains to start using a newly completed railway at high speeds as soon as they are finished. The article discusses the keys to achieving high speed handbacks and the improved asset reliability and reduced installation costs that ultimately result.
