Turkey's Important New Tunnel
This article discusses how major advances in tunnelling technology will allow vehicles to travel below the Bosphorus Sea channel in Instanbul, Turkey. The new tunnel expects to open for vehicle traffic next year and it will reduce travel time of a journey that currently takes over an hour and a half to 15 minutes. The tunnel will contain a 3.34km-long central bored section which actually passes under the sea and will contain two decks, one for each direction with two lanes and an emergency shoulder. Once the tunnel is complete, only car-traffic and mini-buses will be able to use it. The tunnel will incorporate new developments in technology to include new monitoring instruments for the cutterhead, atmospheric pressure, and access for the diving team. Because of the highly active earthquake zone in the region, the design calls for the tunnel to be able to withstand an event of 7.5 magnitude.
