LATCH Ratings Improve: Automakers Make Strides On Child Restraint Installation Hardware

This article reports some of the results of a new Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) rating system that evaluates child seat installation hardware in late model vehicles. The author notes that great strides have been made in installing child safety seats: in the 102 vehicles assessed in 2015, the majority were rated poor or marginal, of the 170 vehicles assessed in 2016, most are rated good or acceptable. The author briefly reviews the importance of both car seats and proper installation, noting that installation errors are common, even with better hardware. The article also lists the ease-of-use criteria that comprise the IIHS rating system and describes the changes made to some specific vehicles, including the Toyota Sienna and Prius models.
