SATELLITE NAVIGATION OF N-W PASSAGE
The operation of the satellite position fixing system and the sonar Doppler system on the ice breaking tanker Manhattan is briefly described. When the sonar velocity output is coupled with directional information from the gyro compass, change of position can be calculated with some accuracy. In association with the satellite equipment two valuable refinements are available. First, the velocity output of the sonar system can be fed to the satellite computer so that each position is calculated accurately and without delay and, secondly, further positions can be calculated on demand between satellite passes using the previous position as the datum. The special problems of navigation near the poles, due to the ice and the high latitudes, are discussed.
