Equitable Bike Share Means Building Better Places for People to Ride

This document looks at the connection between bike share, protected bike networks, and cyclist safety. The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) analyzed seven U.S. cities and determined that as the cities built bike lanes, ridership increased while cycling risk decreased. In addition, bike share programs, while improving mobility and equity, reduced cycling risk by increasing demand for bike lanes. The cities analyzed were Minneapolis, Portland, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, DC. Tables include percent change by city in cycling, bike lane miles, and risk.
