Implementation of Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures

Traffic engineers, vendors and university researchers are developing common means of data collection and dissemination based on events measurable by traffic signal controllers. Signal performance measures (SPMs) can provide insights into signal systems operation, including detector failures. SPMs can also indicate when traffic conditions have changed beyond the parameters the signal controller was designed to deal with. This article describes how SPMs are being implemented and provides examples of recently developed metrics at the Utah Department of Transportation, the Las Vegas Freeway and Arterial System of Transportation, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
