Driving to Safety: How Many Miles of Driving Would It Take to Demonstrate Autonomous Vehicle Reliability?
The research in this report examines the practicality of test driving autonomous vehicles to demonstrate reliability and safety. The findings establish that autonomous vehicles would need to be driven millions, if not billions, of miles to demonstrate their reliability in terms of fatalities and injuries. The authors conclude that innovative methods for testing autonomous vehicle safety and reliability will need to be established and that autonomous vehicle regulations will need to be adaptive.
