Running the numbers

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is experimenting with intelligent compaction, which is the process of measuring and recording roller operations in real time while mapping all roller parameters to a precise global positioning system (GPS) location. The process can be used to improve contractor quality control for asphalt pavement compaction, resulting in longer service life, as well as potentially less state oversight.
