Reality Check: More Realistic Dummies Had to be Developed to Support New Euro NCAP Tests for Pedestrian and Cyclist AEB Technologies

This brief article describes a test used to determine how effective a vehicle’s automatic emergency braking (AEB) system is at detecting and preventing collisions with pedestrians. Instead of a static test dummy, the test uses an articulated, moving dummy designed by 4activeSystems and the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). This dummy will be used to simulate the characteristics of a pedestrian crossing the road. The author also reports on the use of a new assessment to test vehicle-bicycle crashes that includes a more-realistic cyclist and propulsion system.
