The Mirror Cracked: Camera-Based Display Solutions Offer Safety, Fuel Efficiency and Comfort Advantages over Conventional Exterior and Interior Mirrors
This article familiarizes readers with innovative, camera-based strategies that can replace traditional side- and rear-view mirror capabilities in automobiles. The author describes a three-camera system that can be integrated with advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) applications such as lane-change assist or blind spot detection. The cameras provide clear side and rear views, even in rainy or snowy conditions, due to lens coatings and placement of the cameras; visibility in glaring sunlight or at dusk will also be improved. The cameras are also much smaller than conventional mirrors, adding convenience for parking and overtaking. The article includes a sidebar which briefly considers the applications of these types of cameras in commercial vehicles. Another sidebar notes that some legislative changes are upcoming to permit mirrorless vehicles on the market.
