Measuring the Efficiency of Ports and Terminals
The efficiency of ports and terminals is an important indicator of their performance: more efficient ports reduce transportation costs and promote export-import activities of a particular country. In the past decade authors have created a number of studies that dealt with research on efficiency of ports and terminals with special emphasis on transport of goods in containers. It was expected due to the global growth of container traffic in the maritime sector and a relatively simplified performance of the analyses in situations where individual shipments of cargo are standardized. This can also be justified by the fact that container ports and terminals have a role of the vital link between the trading companies and countries around the world, which also applies to other ports and terminals in which different types of cargo are handled (oil, oil products, coal, ore, cereals, etc.), and their importance cannot be ignored. Recent research has suggested that differences in efficiency between individual ports and terminals mainly stem from their lack of technical efficiency. Also, research suggests that their size has a significant impact on the efficiency of ports and terminals because of the possibility of initiating the process of technological progress. Given the logistics costs that apply to them within a certain logistics chain, the efficiency performance level of specific port or terminal greatly affects the country’s competitiveness and may eventually have a decisive impact on the determination of the location of future industrial plants due to the national economic policy. Therefore, determining the efficiency of ports and terminals can provide a significant management tool for port operators to increase their competitiveness, and also a very useful input in the preparation of various studies for the purpose of national and international transport planning.
