Network asset integration group

The Central Queensland coal network (CQCN) is Australia’s largest export coal rail network. In recent years, the traditional construction, ownership and operational model for mine-specific infrastructure in the CQCN has been challenged as coal miners seek to integrate supply chains and to manage capital to minimise their total supply chain cost. This action by miners has resulted in a new phenomenon - the construction and ownership of coal rail infrastructure by companies other than the incumbent owner and manager of the CQCN, the Aurizon Group. However, rather than operate this private infrastructure individually the coal miners preferred Aurizon’s management under Aurizon’s rail infrastructure manager accreditation. The challenge was to integrate these rail assets, to be owned by miners and operated over by 3rd party train operators, into Aurizon’s mainline rail network in a live environment where limited precedent existed. The solution was an asset integration framework, developed by the Ranbury Management Group and implemented by Aurizon’s Network Assets Integration Group. The outcome - Aurizon completed the connections and accepted the private assets consistent with other supply chain requirements and in compliance with Aurizon’s commercial, legal and safety obligations.
