Alert security: DOTs need to take the right steps to avoid attack

Today's highways and arterials in the U.S. comprise highly interconnected, far-reaching and integrated transportation systems which require reliable communication networks spanning broad geographical areas. As these systems become increasingly "networked" and connected, the possibility that infrastructure, such as traffic management centers, bridges, tunnels, rail-control systems and signal-control systems, may be manipulated via cyber components to cause crashes and destroy critical systems is very real. To combat cyber threats, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) strives to maintain high cybersecurity standards and encourages cybersecurity best practices by transportation providers, as delineated in this article.
