GLACIER-HERBERT STERN GEAR SYSTEM
The system is intended primarily for the larger vessel with machinery developing 10,000 to 50,000 shp per shaft and is designed to permit the inspection and replacement of the outboard seal and sterntube bearing without dismantling the shafting or removing the propeller, even in a loaded ship afloat. Other advantages claimed are-improved bearing design and location giving better load distribution with scope to control whirling/ reduced shaft bending and suppression of the conical propeller mounting, resulting in improved reliability/ and the ability to change the propeller quickly without dismantling any other element of the sterngear system. Design details are given. Inspection and overhaul facilities are described.
