Open-graded friction courses experience and improved mix design
This paper presents a summary of the evaluation of the permeability and durability performance of conventional, rubberized and polymer-modified open-graded asphalt concrete mixes, and an overview of an improved mix design procedure. The results are taken from six years of field evaluation of mixes with 9.5 and 12.5 mm maximum aggregate size gradations, and the accelerated pavement testing (APT) evaluation of 9.5 and 4.75 mm maximum size gradation mixes. Raveling was monitored in terms of mean profile depth in the field. Permeability was measured in both the field and on the APT track in the initial condition and after trafficking. The mix design procedure is an improvement of the NCAT method incorporating both volumetrics and performance related tests for draindown and mechanical durability and was calibrated using conventional, polymer modified and rubberized mixes. The paper provides a summary of all field and APT results, the mix design procedure, and recommendations for practice.
