Benchmarking performance testing on standard asphalt mixes in terms of the current and new HMA design method
The use of Hot-mix Asphalt in South Africa dates back to as early as the 1920’s. The first draft of the TRH 8 was compiled in 1978 (with a subsequent revision compiled in 1987), and it dealt with the selection and design of HMA surfacing for roads. Due to significant changes to some of the design parameters of HMA (e.g. increase in legal axle weight limits, heavy traffic volumes, etc.); the haphazard adoption of new international design methods and research; and the use of new Asphalt mixes, the Interim Guideline for the Design of Hot-mix Asphalt in South Africa (2001) (IGDHMA) was subsequently compiled. The Asphalt Mix Design Manual for South Africa (2014) (AMDMSA), driven by the Southern African Bitumen Association (Sabita), was compiled with the primary role of advancing the design of asphalt towards a more performance-related specification, which would be in line with international best practices. This manual was drafted to supersede the IGDHMA, as well as to incorporate all the significant technological developments that have taken place since the IGDHMA was drafted, both locally and internationally. This paper will evaluate Asphalt mix designs that was approved for a rehabilitation construction project on the N1 just north of Pretoria. The IGDHMA required testing was conducted on the asphalt mix designs, as well as the AMDMSA required testing for the same mixes. The intention of this paper is not to provide an exhaustive comparison of all conventional asphalt mix designs, but rather to give Practitioners who are involved in the design of asphalt, a practical example of what the implications of the new AMDMSA is.
