P & O RESEARCH
In Sept 1958 the P & O Research and Development Co, Ltd, was formed to investigate all ideas and suggestions sent in by the seagoing and shore staffs of the P & O Co and other members of the P & O group. Funds were available for development of selected inventions which were first given service experience in the companys ships before being offered to interested manufacturing companies in the United Kingdom and abroad. Some details are given for the following items-threadless Pilgrim nut, Pilgrim keyless propeller, Morgrip bolt, Pilgrim alignment indicator, and ganged bolt tightener. Items under development are-ships speed recorder, cylinder wear recorder, insulating high pressure flanged joint (boltless), and fatigue testing machine.
