HYDRODYNAMIC FORCES ON OSCILLATING AND NON-OSCILLATING SMOOTH CIRCULAR CYLINDERS IN CROSSFLOW

A 12-in-diameter, 6-ft-long cylinder was towed horizontally 4 ft beneath the water surface and perpendicular to the flow. The cylinder was towed at a constant velocity under the following conditions: nonoscillating, oscillating in heave, oscillating in pitch (around the axis of the cylinder), and simultaneously oscillating in pitch and heave. Experimental data on lift, drag, and moment were obtained for Reynolds number from about 100,000 to above 1 million. The results show that the oscillations can significantly influence the magnitude of the lift, drag, and moments. (Author)
