MECHANICAL ICE CUTTER DESIGN AND TESTING OF 1/6TH SCALE MODEL
The report covers the last phase of the development of a 1/6 scale(24ft) model of a unique mechanical ice cutting and ice displacement concept for clearing ice free channels at a full scale target speed of 5 knots in 2ft of fresh water ice. The mechanics of ice cutting are analyzed. The theoretical ice breaking and ice removing resistance is also modeled mathematically and scaling laws are included in the analysis. A recount of winter 1973 tests in a Pennsylvania Lake describes the instrumentation and data as well as the operation of an ice traction system used to replace conventional marine propulsion. Full scale performance and design are also predicted in detail. (Author)
