Safe system approach. The expectations and challenges

The safe system approach is comprised of a few closely interlinked levels of action. The overall goal, however, remains the same: to focus on road safety and to develop a road system which will eradicate the occurance of road victims. The paper highlights the relationship between road safety and traffic psychology. This topic is critical as it relates to the current discussion concerning road safety and the new philosophy of action known as the safe system approach. Firstly, a brief overview of the new approach is outlined. Secondly, the work of Prof. Ralf Risser is used to illustrate whether goals - which are also common to the "Fit to drive conference" - have been realized. Finally, some strategies for the future work are proposed.
