BIOASSY OF MARINE ANTIFOULANTS-2
Screening of shipbottom coatings. The bioassay of a coating is based upon a series of observations of the coatings effect upon a population of young, newly attached barnacles. These observations are graded from 1 to 10 in accordance with a 10 point scale which was devised for this purpose. Experimental procedures and results for several antifouling paints in laboratory bioassays are given. It is concluded that the general methodology developed for the performance of laboratory bioassays may be considered successful, and the response to toxics of barnacles within the laboratory test environment closely parallels the behavior of barnacles on antifouling coatings in nature.
