COGLAD: A COAST GUARD LORAN-C ASSIST DEVICE

The Coast Guard Loran-C Assist Device (COGLAD) was developed at the request of the Systems Development Branch of the United States Coast Guard to enhance the shipboard use of Loran-C. The Atlantic coast and most of the Great Lakes are within the range of high quality ground-wave Loran-C signals; however, some form of data processing is necessary to make the awkward hyperbolic grid system of Loran-C easier to use. Using a commercial Loran-C receiver, a programmable calculator, and an interface unit, COGLAD provides the navigator with heading angle, relative position information, velocity information, and a real-time plot of ship's position on standard navigation charts. COGLAD is currently installed on a buoy tender operating out of Port Huron, Michigan, and has been used successfully as a navigation aid since January 1971. (Author)
