Rider Behaviour Analysis Motorcycle: A New Analysis System for Powered Two-Wheelers
The Ministry responsible for road safety has identified the reduction of traffic-related deaths in France as one of its main objectives. Official figures indicate that, in 2013, Motorcycles accounted for 2% of total motor vehicle traffic, yet represented 19% of deaths and 20% of injuries on France's roads. Although these figures have been falling steadily over the last 10 years and more (33% reduction since 2000), the ratio remains a genuine cause for concern. There is a substantial lack of knowledge about the interactions between motorcycles and infrastructure. Furthermore, it has proven consistently difficult to study the dynamics of a motorcycle. For this reason, CEREMA has developed a new system designed to understand and analyze the influence of road infrastructure on rider behavior, and on the driving strategy adopted by motorcycles around certain types of infrastructure such as roundabouts, pinch points and chicanes. The outcomes of this analysis may be used to produce technical infrastructure design guides that reflect motorcycle issues.
