HYDRAULIC-PNEUMATIC FLOATING FENDER--FINAL EVALUATION
This final report summarizes the results of in-service tests of two experimental hydraulic-pneumatic floating fenders in the Harbors of San Diego, California and Port Heuneme, California. Each fender consisted of a wood-steel-plastic bulkhead 50 ft. long, 1 ft. 8 inches wide and 7 ft. 3 inches high fronted by two air-filled and two water filled rubber bags, and chains with weights to maintain the total assembly in position. Significant conclusions based on this study as reported by the authors include: The experimental hydraulic-pneumatic fenders are an expensive alternate to conventional fender pile systems; although the combined initial and maintenance cost is high, the fender system is considered to be cost-effective in sheltered locations; and the fender should prove useful in upgrading the effectiveness of existing fender systems.
