Modeling LRT Versus BRT Preferences in Developing Countries: The Case of Multan, Pakistan

Rapid transit modes are becoming popular in the developing world, as authorities make efforts towards improving transportation and mobility conditions in urban areas. Options such as LRT and BRT are often examined as alternatives, mainly because of their increased capacity capabilities combined with lower investment costs, particularly when compared to regular metro systems. This paper investigates traveler perceptions on alternative options of implementing an LRT or a BRT in Multan, Pakistan, based on an extensive household information survey undertaken in the city. Willingness to pay for these systems and choice between the two alternatives are modeled using binary logit models. Results indicate that respondents with higher household expenditure for transportation tend to prefer LRT systems, while commuters and older people express a taste towards BRT.
