GOVERNING AND LOAD SHARING IN MULTI-ENGINE INSTALLATIONS
Woodward Governor (U.K.) Ltd has designed a pneumatic control system which can be applied to almost any multi-engine installation with three or four medium-speed diesel engines coupled to the same propeller shaft. For a three-engined layout, four speed controllers are fitted, one for each individual engine and a master controller. Each engine controller is linked to its engine governor through a solenoid-operated valve, which is actuated when the engine/gearbox clutch is engaged, to transfer control to the master speed controller. Thus each engine can be tested individually and upon engagement of its clutch, have a common speed-setting signal. The fuel control linkage of each governor is connected to a pneumatic transmitter mounted on the governor which produces an air pressure proportional to the governor fuel output position. Also mounted in each governor is a differential diaphragm assembly called the receiver, which is connected through linkage to the governor speed setting system. Thus, any differential forces produced in the receiver will either raise or lower the speed setting and the fuel control of the governor. The system is designed so that a 10 rpm speed setting error at an operational speed of 1000 rpm results in a 2% fuel error, and a 10 rpm speed setting error at 450 rpm results in less than 1% fuel error, assuming an 80% stroke from no load to full load.
