DUCTED PROPELLER DESIGN METHOD: A NEW APPROACH USING SURFACE VORTICITY DISTRIBUTION TECHNIQUES AND LIFTING LINE THEORY

Presents a brief review of a new theoretical method of design of ducted propellers which avoids the use of linearized theory for the duct. Surface vorticity distribution techniques are used to represent both the duct and boss. This portion of the theory has been developed from similar two dimensional theories which have been proved to be successful for other applications. The present method makes use of established lifting line theory for the propeller although modifications have been made to allow for its combination with the duct theory. Results are given of the application of the new method to three ducted propellers for which published experimental data are available. The method is still under development and this paper in effect indicates the progress of the first phase. The results to date are considered to be most encouraging and work is currently in hand to extend the method from the present open water case to fully wake adapted conditions.
