AUTOMATED RECORDING AND ANALYSIS OF WAVE PATTERNS BEHIND TOWED MODELS
For some years the measurement and analysis of wave patterns have played a useful part in research on the resistance of ships and hovercraft. At the time of writing most existing methods are limited to specialized research applications because of the time and effort needed for even a modest output of results. In ship Division NPL however, a prototype fully automated system has now been developed and operated and a standard facility to be available for use in routine testing of new hull designs is being built. Describes the system and the prototype operationg experience already gained and discusses applications both to research and to routine testing.
