POSSIBILITIES OF ECONOMICALLY IMPROVING THE THROUGH-PUT OF HUMP-YARDS
The speed of splitting-up a train in a marshalling yard is proportional to the speed attained by the vehicles at the foot of the hump, and the rapidity with which they succeed one another. This speed is also affected by the length of wheel-base of the vehicles which block the operation of the points when the former negotiate them. Points of a new type, comprising a mobile 1.50 metre section, the operation of which is locked by a photoelectric cell, are capable of increasing output by approximately 43%. There is no difficulty in laying these points, which are of very robust design, and easy and economic to maintain, and do not risk being blocked by snow. Output can be increased still further by making use of the Hauhinco type retarder, which is based on the crushing of rubber molecules - the vehicle is braked in accordance with its weight and speed, the latter being determined by radar.
