SOME FINANCIAL ASPECTS OF SHIPPING CONFERENCES

Shipping conferences, the arrangements within which majority of liner operators carry on their business of acting as common carriers by sea, have been attracting attention for many years and from many directions. The object of this paper is not to attack or to defend them in any of their various forms but to discuss the costing and accounting systems which might be employed to assist their members and to assure their customers, the shippers at one end of their route and the consignees at the other end, that the levels of efficiency and profit are not unreasonable.
