ADVANCES IN FOULING PREVENTION
After corrosion, fouling is the most important problem in the protection of ships' bottoms. By fouling is meant the growth on submerged surfaces of vegetable or animal organisms which settle as spores or larvae and grow on these substrates into their adult forms. Besides greatly increasing the frictional resistance of ships, fouling causes damage to coatings, acceleration of corrosion due to differential aeration, increase in the weight of buoys, etc. The following topics are discussed in some detail-fouling mechanisms; the leaching of toxic agents from paints; toxics containing organic groups with particular attention to organometallic compounds; and testing and investigations. Miscellaneous means of fouling prevention.
