NEW CONCEPT: SYSTEMS FOR DISCHARGING SUPERTANKERS AT SEA

This article describes a system for the transferral of large quantitites of bulk liquid cargo between two tankers underway at sea. The system is based on the concept that a very large tanker will offload some or all of her cargo while at sea, into one or more smaller tankers, which will in turn transport the cargo to various shore points. The main component of the system is a large diameter hose, fitted at the after end with a probe cylinder and a float assembly, and at the forward end with a flange and sealing arrangement. The bow of the receiving tanker is fitted with a tapered throat for recieving the probe cylinder, and the bulk liquid is transferred from ship to ship through this hose.
